The Break Down
The Selection - A quality Insulated Bulkhead is the most important step - Bulkheads are an investment. Some Bulkheads cost more than others and some Bulkheads are definitely better than others but they can all be damaged and require maintenance and repairs. The best Bulkheads can sometimes last for years before needing major repairs. Other Bulkheads can be destroyed the first time that they are used because of poor initial quality. Then there is everything in between! The Bulkhead Service Life Rating is a critical consideration when selecting a Bulkhead. We at AAA Insulated Bulkhead are experts in Bulkhead Construction and can rate every Bulkhead made, past and present.
Damage - So why would you worry about damage? The Bulkhead today is as important as your Truck, Trailer or Reefer Unit. Looking at the broad range of damage a product can incur, lets evaluate just a few. Since Bulkheads are built to fit tightly within a trailer the seals can get sliced, torn or simply worn away. The scuff or bottom base of the product grinds away with movement between different trailers, or on the warehouse floor, is impacted by pallets during loading and eventually we now have a damaged bulkhead. Bits of the core will get caught and torn. Straps and handles wear out or are even torn off in many cases. Hinges fail and optional components such as Vents and Fans can be damaged.
The End Result - Now the Bulkhead no longer does what it was designed to do. Some Bulkheads were never going to provide you with a decent Service Life because they were a terrible product from day 1. Sometimes the wrong type of Bulkhead is selected to meet the needs of the products carried within that vehicle and its simply not working out.
The damaged bulkhead will make your refrigeration unit run time longer, wasting fuel and increasing maintenance costs

The damaged bulkhead will make your refrigeration unit run time longer, wasting fuel and increasing maintenance costs
- A modern Refrigeration unit, or Reefer as they are known is designed to cycle off and on based on Inside temperatures. It will not do so when damaged Bulkheads or no Bulkheads are used. This may double the hourly operation expense, consume additional fuel and increase repair needs.
- The damaged bulkhead seals, scuff base, and options will lead to product losses due to unwanted air movement from one compartment into another
Freezing front compartment air will migrate through damaged hinges, around torn or crushed seals, go over the top of short Bulkheads or under damaged scuff.
Your Frozen products thaw, produce freezes, vegetables become contaminated and packages get wet. - The damaged bulkhead now creates customer dissatisfaction and can result in lost accounts. Drivers are your first point of customer contact and can become frustrated by dissatisfied Customers.
Frozen or thawed food products and wet, damaged packaging are frequently the results of food delivered in a vehicle that cannot maintain compartmental temperature control. Returned goods, emergency trips to replace products, etc. all erode Driver - Customer relations. FDA Regulations state DRIVERS are held responsible for Temperature but how can a driver do anything is his Bulkhead is 6" too short, for example? - A properly fitting bulkhead is supposed to require energy to install, fitting tightly all around. It should NOT fit with ease.
- The unsatisfied customer creates a poor working atmosphere for your drivers
Customers will often first complain to the drivers, about the products that have delivered. FDA Rules say Drivers are responsible and there are some things Drivers can do BUT Drivers cannot turn a damaged Bulkhead into a good Bulkhead.
A commonly forgotten phrase is appropriate here the most important "Keep your employees happy". Without them nothing is possible.
